With about six weeks until the regular season ends, there is
still one major question about the Chicago Bulls: Will PG Derrick Rose play
this season or will he wait until he is 110% healthy and play next season?
It was game
one of the 1st round of the Eastern Conference and the Bulls were
playing the Philadelphia 76ers. With 1:22 left to play and the Bulls with a
comfortable lead of 12, Rose went up to jump and came down awkwardly
immediately grabbing his left knee with pain. Rose had to be carried off the
court ending his season and the Bulls chances of winning a title. Derrick Rose
suffered the worst injury a NBA player could have; he tore the ACL in his left
knee. After his surgery in May of 2012, Dr. Brian Cole said that Rose could be
back in 8-12 months.
Although
Rose has been participating in full contact at practice, he told the USA Today
that he was not going to return until he was “110% healthy.” Head Coach Tom
Thibodeau has told reporters that Rose is “day to day” and that “It's when he's ready, and that's the big
thing.” Do I think that Rose will play this year? Yes. But when? I expect him
to come back in the next two to three weeks.
Being without their MVP you would
think that the Bulls would be struggling but actually the Bulls currently hold
the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference Standings. At 34-26 so far
this season, the Bulls have been getting great contributions from PG’s Kirk
Hinrich and Nate Robinson who are filling in for Rose as they combine for 19
points per game and 9 assists. C Joakim Noah has never been much of an
offensive threat in his career but is averaging a career high 12.1 points per
game and F Loul Deng leads the team with 16.4 per game. The Bulls rank 3rd
in the league in points allowed at 91.3 per game and 8th assists at
23 but are 28th in points per game at 92.7 so when Rose and his
career 21 points per game come back, it will definitely boost the offensive
side of the team.
Derrick Rose will not return until
he feels like how he felt in his 2011 season when he won the NBA MVP. He says
that he is getting better everyday and I believe that you will see him on the
court in a Bulls uniform in the coming weeks.
